Gas Line Repair in Utah

Across the 48 Utah towns we route calls in, 83% of households are on mains gas and 2% on bottled or tank propane. Those are two different arrangements with two different answers about who owns the pipe.

Utah runs 83% mains gas against 2% tank propane across the 48 covered towns. The difference decides ownership: a meter outlet marks where the utility's responsibility stops, and a tank installation is the owner's throughout.

Weighted across 844,366 occupied homes. The spread inside the state is the point: Hooper is highest on mains at 95%, and Goshen has the largest propane share at 52%. A state figure describes neither.

The two arrangements, and why the difference is not cosmetic

Of the 48 towns we route in here, 47 are mostly on mains gas, 1 have a substantial propane share, 0 are split between the two and 0 use very little gas of any kind.

On a mains connection, 49 CFR § 192.3 ends the regulated service line at "the outlet of the customer meter or at the connection to a customer’s piping, whichever is further downstream" — so part of the system is the operator’s. On propane there is no service line and no meter boundary, and the whole installation is the property owner’s.
